I've Become a Victim of Identity Theft
Why I Started This Blog
My name is Banso. I now don't ignore ads like the one above anymore. Who me? Identity theft? Not me I used to say. After becoming a victim of identity theft by helping an ex co-worker who posed as a battered homeless person in 2007, I was sucked into a stream of incidents involving the theft of my identity by her and her boyfriend. When the bills started arriving this January 2008, totaling almost $20,000 including losses obtained from real estate damages to an automobile fraudulently obtained from me via entrapment, I knew something was wrong. I had become a victim.
When identity theft occurs you feel naked. It has been around for hundreds of years, but the internet age has certainly changed the tactics involved. It can feel very embarrasing that you were somehow taken in by a clever tactic or ploy to get through your defenses. How can identity theft victims help change laws? Perhaps it starts by taking action with our own hands (like typing on a blog) and becoming more aware like I have of how identity theft can occur. This includes: signing up for identity protection services, contacting appropriate authorities when theft occurs, diligently pursuing evidence (even when police give up and you won't) and doing your best to resolve the situation and make others aware of these types of crimes occuring in our community. Like Crime Stoppers - we all have to help. Even a blog like this might help.
Here's how identity theft happens to unsuspecting and gullible victims like myself. Obviously not everyone has the same sad story to tell. My true story is a long one. I also have a blog here. I'm still in the process of prosecuting the perpetrators to get restitution since it's only been two months now. I wish you all the best and hope it never happens to you. If you have any ideas or sites that can help victims like myself they are certainly appreciated !
